MANILA, Philippines – Laoag City Vice Mayor Michael Fariñas was killed in a car crash that also injured his bodyguard on Wednesday afternoon, June 6.
The Laoag City police said Fariñas, who would have turned 53 in August, died after his Mercedes Benz rammed into a concrete barrier while negotiating a curve along Bypass Road in Brgy. Vira around 4:45 pm.
Witnesses said they saw the vehicle speeding through the sharp curve before swerving towards the rice field. The vice mayor was the one behind the wheel and was not using his seatbelt, reports said.
His bodyguard, SPO3 Melchor Geronimo luckily survived the crash because, unlike Fariñas, he was buckled up in his seat.
The official reportedly sustained serious injuries to the head and the body. He was immediately rushed to Gov. Roque B. Ablan Sr. Memorial Hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Geronimo also sustained injuries and is currently being treated.
Fariñas is a former three-term mayor of Laoag City before his wife, Chevylle Fariñas, took over the position following her victory in the 2013 election. He is the nephew of House Majority Floor Leader Rodolfo Fariñas Sr.
Meanwhile, the Fariñas family has yet to release a statement on the vice mayor’s death.
