- The mastermind behind Eriguel’s assassination could be a mayor, reports says
- The police, however, have yet to officially confirm this
- Eriguel supporters believe the captured suspect, Villanueva, could not be the mastermind
MANILA, Philippines – More than a week have passed since former La Union Rep. Eufranio Eriguel was shot dead during an SK meeting last May 12, police have yet to identify the mastermind behind the assassination.
One suspect, Felizardo Villanueva, a barangay captain candidate who lost in the election, has been arrested in connection with the crime but authorities have yet to identify the brain behind Eriguel’s murder.
But according to Bombo Radyo La Union, is Police Regional Office Region (PRO-1) to make an announcement on Tuesday tagging an incumbent town mayor in La Union as the mastermind.
However, this has yet to be confirmed by PRO1 regional director Chief Supt. Romulo Sapitula.
Eriguel was killed after around nine armed men stormed the SK miting de avance in Brgy. Capas, Agoo town and opened fire; killing the former lawmaker and two of his civilian security escorts.
One of his supporters who was wounded, Patrick Manabat, died in the hospital 4 days later. Seven other people were injured in the incident.
Earlier, Sapitula said there is a big possibility that the assassins are ‘uniformed personnel’ because of the high-caliber weapons they used in the attack. Sapitula, however, clarified the suspects could either be from the police service or the military.
Many of Eriguel supporters believe Villanueva, who gave the killers Eriguel’s location via text messages, could not be the mastermind.
In an interview with Inquirer, Rolando Rivera, a former provincial board member, said the mastermind is actually ‘known to many people’ in the town, but declined to give a name.
