Cayetano willing to ‘happily’ step down only if Duterte orders it

  • DFA Secretary Alan Cayetano said he is willing to step down only if his department and the President will ask it of him
  • He shrugged off calls for resignation as “politics”
  • He said people from his department still support him

Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Cayetano admitted that he is willing to step down but only if his people from Department of Foreign Affairs and President Duterte would ask him.

“If the President tells me to go, I will go happily and I will continue to support him. If a majority in the DFA says we cannot follow you, I have no business being there,” Cayetano was quoted by ABS-CBN saying.

But he added that people from his department are still supporting him. “But so far, I’ve had meetings with them, they understand. They might not agree with our decisions, but they understand. So the calls are normal, it’s politics but I think kayo na mag-judge whether this last year we stepped up or we’ve slacked off in taking care of the concerns of our OFWs.”

Cayetano confirmed that there are calls for his resignation but he shrugged them off as “politics.”

This came after tensions escalated between Kuwait and the Philippines after “rescue videos” of OFWS were released by the DFA.
