Seven members of a “budol-budol” gang who are notorious for swindling elderly people were arrested in Valenzuela City.

Based on police estimates, the gang, which had been operating for nearly three years, took around P1 million in cash and valuables from at least four victims, said Senior Supt. Rolando Mendoza, city police chief.

The following suspects were arrested at G. Lazaro Street in Barangay Dalandanan on Monday right after they victimized an elderly woman:

  1. Rosalie Ramirez
  2. Andy dela Cuesta
  3. Felix Serrano
  4. Rogelio Barcelo
  5. Rizalyn Hernandez
  6. Gina dela Cruz
  7. Ireneo Lapuz

Asking for directions

According to the victim, 50-year-old Carmen Balucatin, she was first approached by Dela Cruz and Serrano who pretended to ask for directions.

The victim was later convinced to accompany them in their van where the other suspects were waiting.

During the ride, the budol-budol gang claimed they could help her make more money if she would show them her bank passbook and give them P3,000 in exchange for P5,000.

However, the victim realized she had been fooled after finding out that they gave her a fake P500 bill stapled to paper cutouts.

Luckily, the victim was able to cry for help from the authorities who caught the suspects after a chase, according to Senior Insp. Romeo Hizon, police investigation unit chief.

Another victim who surfaced said she was scammed of P225,000 on Feb. 15 after Dela Cruz and Hernandez pretended to be Chinese women. Flaunting huge wads of “cash,” the suspects sought the victim’s help in opening an account in a Malinta bank.

The suspects all admitted to swindling senior citizens. They will be charged with syndicated (large-scale) estafa and robbery with threat.
