SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Many freshmen get nervous when it comes to navigating their way to new campus and making friends in college; however, the story of 18-year-old Melanie Salazar is different as she already has someone “older and wiser” to show her the ropes of life.
Melanie found a company of her own in her 82-year-old grandfather Rene Neira who is also attending his college classes at Palo Alto College.
The story of Melanie and her grandpa is reaching too many people after she tweeted a photo showing her and Rene attending their first day of class this semester.
An article by Yagana Shah for the Huffington Post said that Melanie has just started her studies in the college while Rene is about to finish his associate’s degree in economics.
The grandpa has only one class left to achieve it while attending his second semester at the San Antonio, Texas community college.
“Grandpa and I are very close,” said Melanie.
“I like to say he’s my best friend and it’s great to have him here with me,” she added.
The college freshman said it’s nice to have her grandpa on the campus, whether they’re walking to class together or grabbing lunch.
Rene had to take a break from his studies because of family responsibilities after he first went to college in the 1950s. He is completing his dream now by taking classes throughout the year.
The granddaughter’s sweet post on social media is getting attention from online users and has made the story viral.
“I’m so proud of my grandpa for finishing his first day at PAC this semester! 82 years old and not giving up!!!” said Melanie on her post.
“My grandpa is very hardworking, He will spend hours in the library studying on his own time because he’s that dedicated to his education. It’s amazing that his story can inspire so many people in this way,” she added.
Moreover, the devout student grandpa just won’t just stop with his Associate’s degree; as this early he already has plans to attend the University of Texas at San Antonio to get his Bachelor’s. A really cool schoolmate for a granddad!
