NEW YORK – A tableware company is selling disposable cups that are both biodegradable and edible to avoid the usual waste that comes from trashing plastic cups at the end of a party.

Maren Estrada mentioned in her article for BGR published on June 17 that Loliware started the idea of creating tableware that can be eaten or one that will quickly degrade if thrown out.

“You can throw them in the grass or disintegrate them in a matter of minutes with hot water,” said Chelsea Briganti, the co-founder of Loliware.

“For every cup eaten, we are saving a plastic cup from entering the landfill. Billions of plastic cups are entering the landfill every year. If Loliware replaces even a small percentage that would have far-reaching impact,” she added.

Researchers led by Jenna Jambeck of the University of Georgia said that around 275 million metric tons (MMT) of plastic waste was produced in 2010.

An article by Sarah Grossman for Huffington Post said that Loliware cups avoid this waste issue by being compostable, which is capable of totally degrading into the soil within 60 days.

“If it happens to end up in a stream or a waterway where it’s not supposed to, it’s going to break down just like a banana peel would if it ends up in a stream,” co-founder Leigh Ann Tucker said.

“That is a big step up from other corn-based bioplastics that are actually still a huge issue in waterways,” she added.

The company’s website revealed that the cups are made from seaweed and organic sweeteners, and was proven to be definitely safe to eat. The cups are available in different flavors like Citrus, Cherry, Matcha Green Tea and others.

The edible cups are sold at $15.99 (P740) for a pack of four.
