SHERBORNE, England – For 30 years a comic book cover hung on a schoolgirl’s bedroom wall, little does she knew that the collector’s piece will be sold as high as $58,000 (P2.7 million).

An article by the Francais Express published on June 27 said that the original Thor artwork had been initially valued at $6,600 after the unidentified owner decided she wanted to sell it.

The owner, who is now 42 years old, was left stunned after the artwork attracted worldwide attention, especially from serious comic collectors. The comic cover went for auction at $47,500 and was bought by an American bidder for a huge amount of $58,000.

Vicky Smith mentioned in her article for Mirror Co UK that the comic cover was used by Thor comic issue 158 dated December 1968, and said to be a significant edition as it was when Thor realized he was a superhero.

The artwork was made by renowned comic artist Jack Kirby, who also helped in creating other Marvel superheroes such as Hulk, Captain America, and the X-Men.

Reports said the artwork was given as a gift by the owner’s now deceased father, who happens to be a leading art director of his time and most likely had acquired the cover via a contact.

The daughter pinned up the artwork in her bedroom in the mid-1970’s and was left untouched until it went to auction recently.

“The cover is the original artwork and I think the owner realized it could be valuable and so decided to sell it, rather than keep it hanging up on the wall,” said Richard Bromell, from Charterhouse Auctioneers in Sherborne, Dorset.

“We estimated it would sell for between £5,000 to £8,000, but we were very proactive in finding bidders and had nine of them on the telephones as well as those in the room,” he added.
