LISBON, Portugal – A baby was miraculously delivered alive after surviving four months in the womb of a mother who was declared brain “dead” and was hooked to a ventilator.

Rob Waugh mentioned in his article for Metro published on June 13 that the baby boy, named Lourenco Salvador, was born healthy after surviving 107 days inside Sandra’s womb, despite the mother being brain dead.

Sandra suffered a fatal brain hemorrhage after complaining of a headache and was in a coma before doctors diagnosed her to be clinically dead.

Miguel, Lourenco’s father, revealed that the attending physicians are about to switch off Sandra’s life support when they were astounded to find out that there is a heartbeat inside the “dead” woman.

Doctors are initially thinking that Sandra’s baby was also dead.

“She was taken in on the Saturday and they were going to pull the plug on Sunday,” said Miguel as quoted by Lucy Thornton in her article for Mirror Co UK.

“Then they did a test and found a heartbeat and the doctor said, ‘Never in my life have I had a dead person with a live baby inside of her’”, Miguel added.

The father said he is still dealing with sadness from his wife’s death, but nevertheless happy that their son is alright.

“It was strange. I hoped my son would survive but I thought it was a long shot. It was a long time to wait, to get to 32 weeks,” Miguel said.

“Every day I feared the phone call saying he hadn’t made it,” he added.

After fulfilling her duty as a mother, Sandra can now rest as her life support has now been switched off.
