The camp of incoming President Rodrigo Duterte negotiated with the Abu Sayyaf for the release of Marites Flor from captivity.

The President-elect expressed his gratitude for the help of Presidential Peace Adviser Jesus Dureza and Sulu Gov. Abdusakur Tan in securing the release of the Filipina hostage.

“We are able to negotiate for the release of Marites Flor. Instrumental in the release is Secretary Jesus Dureza. Even Gov. Abdusakur Tan also helped,” Duterte said.

Marites Flor was among the four persons, including 2 Canadians and a Norwegian, abducted at a resort in Davao del Norte in September last year. The Two Canadians, John Ridsdel and Robert Hall, were already executed by the Abu Sayyaf, while Norwegian Kjartan Sekkingstad remains in captivity. Hall was Flor’s live-in partner.

Marites was released on Friday morning in front of Gov. Tan’s residence in Jolo, Sulu after nine months of captivity. She was then turned over to the military and was brought to Trauma Station Hospital at Camp General Teodolfo Bautista in Jolo, Sulu, for medical examination.

She was later fetched by Dureza and accompanied her on a private jet to Davao City for a meeting with Duterte.

According to an article by Update PH, Dureza confirmed Flor’s release was made through the efforts of Duterte and it came with no precondition. No ransom was paid for her freedom, Dureza stressed.

The peace adviser said he did not have any information about the Norwegian, but said there are also efforts to rescue him.

“No word for him yet. We only got Flor,” Dureza said.
