MANILA, Philippines – Elementary students — at least those in the public schools anyway — can show this memo to teachers who give too much homework during the weekends.

Currently going viral again is Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Armin Luistro’s 2010 memorandum reminding teachers not to give their public elementary school pupils homework or assignments on Saturdays and Sundays.

In his explanation, Luistro said that many parents have been complaining about not being able to spend quality time with their children during the weekends because of too much homework.

“Therefore, no homework/assignments shall be given during the weekends for pupils to enjoy their childhood, and spend quality time with their parents without being burdened by the thought of doing lots of homework,” he stressed.

While recognizing the importance of homework as a way to improve the students’ knowledge and skills, Luistro also advised teachers not to burden their wards with a heavy workload during the weekdays too.

“Hence, it is advised that the teachers limit the giving of homework/assignments to a reasonable quantity to give their pupils ample time to rest and relax at home for the rest of the day,” he said.

The memo, which was shared by UNTV Radio La Verdad 1350 KHZ on its Facebook, has garnered more than 8,600 likes and 31,000 shares after it was first posted.

Opinion over the memo has been varied; with some agreeing with Luistro’s observation and others saying homework is also a way for parents to spend quality time with their children. A few also vehemently disagreed with it, saying they survived their homework-heavy school days while still enjoying their childhood.
