Volcano eruption in Indonesia leaves at least 6 dead

A volcanic eruption in the Indonesian island of Sumatra left at least six people dead, a number of people injured, and caused destruction of homes in farming communities surrounding the volcano.

The active volcano Mount Sinabung in the province of Northern Sumatra shot volcanic ash as high up as three kilometers to the atmosphere;  sending a cloud of hot gas and ash down to areas as far as four kilometers away.

National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho had earlier told the Associate Press, as previously quoted by the Wall Street Journal that seven people were exposed to the hot gas and ash, killing three instantly and four others sent to the hospital for treatment.

Since then, the official death toll has risen to six.

The victims were all workers farming on the slope of the volcano, within the so-called “red zone” which the government had earlier declared off-limits due to safety concerns. Images of dead animals within the vicinity that were also covered by ash and dust have also been shown.

The government says it has sent police, military, and disaster response agencies to search for more possible victims.

Mount Sinabung was dormant for more than 400 years before it suddenly erupted in 2010; killing two people. Since then, it has been considered as an active volcano; with another eruption which occurred in 2014 leaving 16 fatalities.

Sinabung is just one of over 120 active volcanoes in the archipelago nation of Indonesia, which sits in the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire” which is an area in the Pacific Basin that goes across Asia, Oceania, and the Americas, that is prone to seismic activities such as volcanic eruptions and frequent earthquakes.
