MANILA, Philippines – Coach Tab Baldwin confirmed that Rain or Shine’s point guard/shooting guard Paul Lee won’t be able to join the Philippine National Basketball Team, popularly known as Gilas Pilipinas, for the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments this July.

Lee sustained a partial tear in both the lateral meniscus and tendons of his left knee and he was advised by his doctor to rest for five to six weeks for the injury to heal.

Baldwin said it’s a misfortune not to have Lee because the team could really use his skill set for the tournament.

Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted the American-Kiwi coach as saying: “Paul is out and that’s a tragedy for Paul. He’s had so many problems with his knees, he’s had so many problems with his body. We said a special prayer for him that he can get those things right. We all saw what he’s capable of doing in the Finals.

As for Gilas, that’s a misfortune for us because I just said to him we can certainly use his skill set and the way he was playing in the Finals, I think he would be an asset for the team.”

However, Baldwin said he won’t sit around and cry over spilled milk and the team must move on.

“We just wish him the best,” Baldwin said of the player. “He’s a fallen brother and I hope that he gets back on his feet as soon as possible. As for Gilas, we’ll move on.”

A total of 18 teams will be joining the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments and they have been divided into three groups.

The tournaments are set to run from July 5 to 10 and only the winners of each of the groupings will qualify for the Rio Olympic Games.
