Robredo ditches Coconut Palace for cheaper OVP office

  • Vice President-elect Leni Robredo shuns Coconut Palace as her official workplace due to exorbitant rent
  • Robredo said she will try to look for a cheaper location rather than pay P500,000 monthly rental
  • She added she would rather use the money for her rural development advocacies

MANILA, Philippines – Vice President-elect Leni Robredo will not use Coconut Palace, the official residence of outgoing Vice President Jejomar Binay, as her office as she finds the rent at P500,000 per month too expensive at the government’s expense.

Instead, the former Camarines Sur congresswoman said, she will try to scout for a cheaper location once she assumes office in June; hoping to put the amount to better use other than paying for the exorbitant monthly rental.

“Iniisip natin kung logical pa ba or mas prudent pa ba na mag-opisina sa Coconut Palace. Alam ko kasi yung arkila ng Coconut Palace ay a little less than P500,000 a month,” Robredo said in an interview with reporters after her proclamation

[I’m thinking whether it’s still logical or more prudent to hold office at Coconut Palace. I know that the rent for the Coconut Palace is a little less than P500,000 a month.]

“Half a million pesos din ‘yun per month. May pangalawang opisina, ‘yung sa 7th floor ng PNB building. So pag-aaralan natin, ano ba ang mas magandang arrangement,” she added.

[That’s still half-a-million pesos per month. There is a second office at the 7th Floor of the PNB building. So we will study what the better arrangement would be.]

Robredo said she would rather utilize the Office of the Vice President (OVP) budget for her advocacy programs for rural development such as providing satellite offices in far-flung provinces across the country.

The 51-year-old widow also admitted she is now considering other means of transportation when traveling to her hometown in Naga City due to security concerns.

While Robredo said she now travels with security personnel on the bus, her office will try to limit her use of public transport, although she still finds the cost of plane ticket too steep at P9,000 during peak seasons.

She added she also feels safer riding a bus than using her own vehicle when going to Bicol.

Robredo and President-elect Rodrigo Duterte were proclaimed by the Joint Congress on Monday, May 30; ending weeks of speculation after losing vice presidential candidate Senator Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos raised the issue of poll fraud against his Bicolana rival.

The Bicolana lawmaker won by a slim margin of 263, 473 votes over Marcos in probably the closest vice presidential contest ever in Philippine election history.

    • She’s very practical. This woman has no airs and is adjusting to the demands of her office — unlike her stupid boss who is moving the Philippines 3 steps back, after advancing 2 steps forward. God help the Philippines.

        • Who do you think? Get real. Duterte is doing stupid, un-presidential things even before he has started. A real VILLAGE IDIOT!!

          • There’s no need of me to exert even less effort in knowing you personally, your words and ideas are enough for anyone to conduct postmortem on your kind!
And how sure are you, presumptuous nyok-nyok, and ruminate na ikaw lang ang nasa labas ng bansa?

  1. Tapos na ang election fever, proclaimed ka na kaya pwede, focus na sa ikagaganda ng bansa at hindi sa ikakagaganda ng image mo?

  2. I think Robredo should consider lessening her trip to her hometown now that she won the election. She owe it to the people to work for the country and should not be treated as a side-job. Her kids should stay near her office is she couldn’t get them off her sight. She was bestowed the second highest ranking office, she is the Vice President of the Republic of the Philippines. Her priorities should be the people of the nation.

  3. yuuck #binay, yuck to all ex-VP’s..di ko alam na ganun pala kamahal ang office ng VP na yan..di man lng nahiya o kinilabutan tong si binay (& all others) na gumasta ng gumasta habang gutom ang taong bayan..thanks goodness!! hindi ako bumoto sayo binay, napaka-impraktical mo pala..kala mo kung sino kang may malaking nagawa dyan sa mamahaling opisina na yan..buti nalng si #robredo nanalo.
