Re-elected Senator Ralph Recto remarked that incoming President Rodrigo Duterte has on his disposal the newly created Department of Information and Communications Technology to go after telecommunications companies who fail to improve the internet speed in the country.

The senator made the remark after outgoing President Benigno Aquino III signed Republic Act Number 10844 creating the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).

“May this serve as a warning to erring telcos. The incoming President will have at his command a new department that is duty-bound to protect the interest of the electronic republic,” Recto was quoted as saying in a Journal Online article written by BTamayo on May 24, 2016.

The incoming president had earlier issued a warning to telcos that he would open the country to foreign telecommunication firms if the existing local telcos fail to improve the internet connection and access in the country.

“I fully support the incoming President’s plan to crack the whip on erring telcos. Hopefully, the newly-created DICT can live up to the task and serve as his loyal army that will win the war against inefficiency in the telecommunications sector,” Recto said.

Recto noted that all Presumptive President Duterte needs to do is to hire the best man, the best Cabinet Secretary to head the newly created DICT to ensure better services from telcos.

At present, the Philippines have the slowest and most expensive internet connections in the world, according to various metrics providers.
