  • President Xi’s last year’s state visit to the UK was regarded as a “milestone visit” paving way to UK—China relations’ “golden era”
  • Both the Buckingham Palace and China’s Foreign Ministry declined to give comment regarding the Queen’s conversation with D’Orsi

Britain’s royal garden parties normally do not generate headlines, but the queen’s candid moment propelled the Buckingham Palace into an international diplomatic tangle. Queen Elizabeth II was caught on camera saying Chinese officials were ‘very rude’ during a state visit to Britain by President of People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping.

According to an article published by CNN, this rare moment of candor from the usually diplomatic monarch was caught on camera by Buckingham Palace’s own staff working on behalf of British broadcasters, as the Queen discusses President Xi’s trip with Metropolitan Police Commander Lucy D’Orsi, who oversaw security operations during Xi’s visit last October.

“Oh, bad luck,” the Queen utters, after hearing commander D’Orsi had been in charge of security for Xi’s visit.

“I’m not sure whether you knew, but it was quite a testing time for me,” D’Orsi tells the Queen.

“Yes, I did,” she responds.

“They were very rude to the ambassador,” the Queen adds, referring to Barbara Woodward, Britain’s first female ambassador to China.

In the midst of the controversy, a spokesperson for Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “We do not comment on the Queen’s private conversations. However, the Chinese State Visit was extremely successful and all parties worked closely to ensure it proceeded smoothly.

China’s foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang declined to directly address the Queen’s comments or confirm whether the “golden era” of UK-China relations was still ongoing, cited in an article published by The Wall Street Journal.

“President Xi’s visit to the UK last year was a very successful one. Both sides have made great efforts for the success of the visit and the two sides highly recognized that,” Lu said on Wednesday, May 11, reaffirming the same sentiment as the Buckingham Palace.
