‘Frozen’ fans took to social media to petition for Disney to give the movie heroine, Elsa, a girlfriend in the much anticipated sequel.
The award-winning and progressive 2013 animated film tells a non-traditional happy-ever-after story of Princess Elsa while struggling to conceal her magical abilities and her relationship with her sister, Anna.
It has been critically-acclaimed for its feminist theme; departing from the studio’s prince charming trope. Fans have noted that Elsa’s story seem to be a metaphor for a “coming out” statement. In her story-line, she discovered how different she is from other people. She tries to hide it, though unsuccessfully, and when she accepted her uniqueness it gave her a sense of pride. Even the movie’s hit theme song ‘Let it Go’ has become an LGBT anthem.
When asked about the underlying gay subtext of the animated film, writer and co-director Jennifer Lee said: “We know what we made. But at the same time I feel like once we hand the film over, it belongs to the world, so I don’t like to say anything, and let the fans talk. I think it’s up to them.”
Now fans are saying Elsa can be an LGBT representative, if only she has a girlfriend. Hence, the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend began trending on Twitter. According to The Telegraph, the campaigners are asking the studio to turn the perceived subtext of homosexuality into a clear story-line which, they argue, may have a strong impact on LGBT children.
Disney announced earlier this year that the sequel, ‘Frozen 2′, is slated to be released before 2018 – with no specific date noted. That gives the studio time to consider making Elsa their first openly gay main character in an animated film.
