Duterte will no longer give DENR top post to progressive left

  • President-elect Rodrigo Duterte changed his mind about giving the DENR top post to the leftist choice
  • He said after going through some papers, he want someone to strongly oversee the department due to some sensitive mining issues
  • He remains committed in giving DAR, DSWD, and DOLE posts to the progressive left

President-elect Rodrigo Duterte would like to consider another person who is not from the progressive left to head the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), as he backtracked from his original plan to hand over the department to the left, citing serious and sensitive issues on mining operations.

Duterte said he has explained to Fidel Agcaoili, emissary of the Communist Party of the Philippines-National Democratic Front (CPP-NDF), why he would no longer give the DENR post to them after going through some papers, during their meeting on Tuesday, May 24, as per an article published by Manila Bulletin.

Agcaoili submitted the list of nominees from the progressive left for government offices reserved for them.

“It is an impressive list, about less than 10,” said Duterte during a press conference.

“If you are identified with the left – that is not an issue with me. Once upon a time I was a left of center,” said Duterte.

He stressed he only wanted a peaceful country. “Hopefully when I step down, wala na yung [there is no more] left, right, Moro, Lumad, Christian. I want to build a strong nation for the next generation,” he said.

The president-elect has been a known critic of the mining operations in the country because of its abuse to our natural resources.

“Mainit ako diyan kasi talagang sinira nila ang ating lupa,” said Duterte.

[I am really furious to that because they really destroyed our land.]

Duterte added that he finds it unacceptable that the oligarchs partnered with multinational mining firms and enriched themselves, leaving nothing for the poor Filipinos but the spoils of their operations.

Duterte remains committed to give 3 other Cabinet positions to the progressive left , and might even consider to put leftists in some agencies, as per an article published by InterAksyon.

He said Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will still go to the progressive left. While the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) went to Silvestre Bello III, who is also the choice of the left.
