Incoming President Rodrigo Duterte assured informal settlers on Sunday that they will not be homeless until a relocation site with employment opportunities are laid out for them.

Duterte was quoted in an ABS-CBN story as saying, “Simula ngayon, walang tao dito sa Pilipinas ang i-evict mo or i-demolish mo hanggang walang malipatan.”

[From now on, no person here in the Philippines will be evicted or whose house will be demolished until there is no relocation for him/her.]

The President-elect, who was city mayor for two decades previously said in a radio interview last year that when relocation are provided for informal settlers, a proper and sustainable “economic activity” must also be provided by the government.

“Kung saan mo ilagay ‘yan sila, there must be an economic activity. Kasi ‘pag hindi, hindi ‘yan pupunta doon, babalik nang babalik ‘yan. Hindi mo mahinto ‘yan,” he told dzMM last December.

[There must be economic activity in the relocation site. Because if there’s non, they won’t stay there. They will just come back where they used to be. The problem won’t be stopped.]

On Sunday, he also said that developers must allocate a budget for the resettlement of the squatters who will be affected in the conduct of their demolition or projects, citing this as a practice in Davao City.

This is among the first few promises of the newly-elected President since it was apparent that he won the elections based on the partial and unofficial vote count.

The former Davao City mayor initially said that it will implement a curfew among minors and that it will have parents of the disobedient youth arrested when they are caught.

He also said that he will prohibit the overnight use of videoke machines especially during celebrations as it disrupts the community at night when everyone is sleeping.
