DA launches campaign to make brown rice more affordable

The Department of Agriculture (DA), through the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) and in partnership with the National Food Authority (NFA), officially launched a campaign to make brown rice more affordable and accessible for the general public.

The BROWN4good Project aims to popularize the consumption of brown rice among Filipinos by ensuring continuous supply of the low-cost product in the market.

“Hunger and malnutrition are huge setbacks in our development as a nation. And DA believes that promoting brown rice as an alternative staple to white rice ensures not only more food on the table but also adequate nourishment for the Filipinos. Thus, the BROWN4good project,” explained DA’s Riceponsible Campaign director Hazel V. Antonio to PhilRice.

Currently, brown rice, which is the unpolished, whole grain version of white rice, costs around P50 to P80 per kilo and is, thus, not as popular or as affordable to consumers.

However, the retained bran of brown rice is much healthier compared to white rice since it contains higher amounts of protein, dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Brown rice, as a whole grain cereal, can actually help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and certain types of cancer.

“The BROWN4good project wants to see more Filipinos making healthy and sensible food choices. A well-nourished people is a country’s pride. DA hopes to bring brown rice back to the Filipino plate — and not just on the high-income families’ dining tables,” Antonio said.
