Kuwaiti court sentences Lebanese-Syrian couple to death for Demafelis’ murder

  • The former employers of the slain OFW, Joana Demafelis, were sentenced in absentia by a Kuwaiti court
  • Nader Essam Assaf and his wife Mona Hassoun were sentenced to death by hanging
  • The sentence could be appealed if the couple return to Kuwait

A Lebanese man and his Syrian wife were sentenced in absentia by a Kuwaiti court over the murder of overseas Filipina worker Joana Demafelis.

As per Al Jazeera, the couple was sentenced by Kuwaiti Criminal Court to die by hanging for killing Demafelis, whose body was discovered inside a freezer in an apartment abandoned by her killers earlier this year.

“The court has ruled in absentia to punish the defendants by hanging on the charges they were assigned to,” part of the court statement read.

A source from the court said the sentence can be appealed if the couple, Nader Essam Assaf and his wife Mona Hassoun, returns to Kuwait.

Assaf and his wife were arrested in Syria in February following a manhunt by Interpol. Assaf, who is a Lebanese, was turned over to Lebanese authorities, while his Syrian wife remained in custody in Damascus, the Syrian capital.

The Lebanese government is considering the request of Kuwait to extradite Assaf.
