A four-storey building in central India collapsed after a speeding car crashed into it. Ten people were killed in the freak accident, while six others suffered injuries.
As mentioned in the NDTV story dated April 1, 2018, the driver lost control of his car and hit the pillar holding up the almost century-old building that housed hotels and lodges last Saturday night, March 31; burying people beneath the rubble.
Police deputy inspector general Harinarayanchari Mishra said rescuers pulled out a number of people under the rubble, and some were already lifeless.
“The impact was such that the entire building collapsed. Rescuers pulled out 12 people from the rubble, 10 of them were already dead. The other two are being treated in hospital,” he said.
A local official in the city of Indore in Madhya Pradesh state said at least 5 people are believed to be still trapped underneath the rubble.
Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, said the victims will receive financial assistance from the state.
Meanwhile, residents of the two buildings next to the collapsed hotel were evacuated as a pre-cautionary measure. Cracks were seen on both buildings.
