Nineteen school children and the bus driver were killed after the school bus they were traveling in collided with a ten-wheeler truck on R25 between Verena in Mpumalanga and Bronkhorstspruit in Gauteng in South Africa Friday afternoon, April 21.
“It is with sadness to inform that a minibus transporting learners was involved in a horrific accident and about 20 learners died on the scene‚” Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said in a statement.
The school bus burst into flames upon impact. The Police have yet to determine what caused the collision.
“The minibus was transporting learners from school and it collided with the truck and caught fire,” Mpumalanga police spokesman Gerald Sedibe said.
The huge truck also caught fire, according to Express. Fortunately, its driver survived.
Russel Meiring of ER24 said the ER24 paramedics who responded assessed the scene and found the school children trapped inside the burnt school bus.
“Unfortunately‚ nothing could be done for the children and they were declared dead on the scene‚” Meiring said in a statement.
